As part of developing support available through Space Between Us, Niki is beginning to offer hypnotherapy sessions alongside her counselling work. Because hypnotherapy is something many people are curious about, but not always sure what to expect, we asked her a few questions about what it involves and how it can help.
What first interested you in hypnotherapy?
I was interested in hypnotherapy because it offers people another way of making changes when talking on its own doesn’t always feel enough. Sometimes people understand what’s happening for them, but still feel stuck. Hypnotherapy can help shift things at a different level, in a calmer and more focused way.
It’s also something people often find surprisingly natural once they try it.
How would you describe hypnotherapy to someone who’s never experienced it before?
Most people already move in and out of similar states of attention during everyday life; when they’re absorbed in music, reading, or driving somewhere familiar and their mind starts to drift slightly. Hypnotherapy makes use of that natural ability in a structured way to support change.
You’re still aware of what’s happening and you remain in control throughout the session. It’s not about being “put under”. It’s more like guided focus and relaxation with a clear purpose.
What kinds of things do people usually come to hypnotherapy for?
People come for lots of different reasons. Anxiety and sleep are very common. Confidence is another area where hypnotherapy can be helpful. Some people want support changing habits, and others just feel stuck in patterns they can’t quite shift through talking alone.
Sometimes people use hypnotherapy alongside counselling, and sometimes it becomes the main way we work together.
What does a session actually feel like?
Sessions are calm and collaborative. We start by talking about what the person would like support with, and then move into the guided hypnotherapy part of the session.
Most people describe it as feeling relaxed but focused at the same time. You can stop at any point, and afterwards people often say they feel calmer or clearer than when they arrived.
Do people need to believe in hypnotherapy for it to work?
Not at all. It’s very normal to feel unsure at first.
Usually what matters most is simply being open to trying something a little different. That’s why we begin with an introductory conversation so people can ask questions and decide whether it feels like the right approach for them.
Is hypnotherapy right for everyone?
Like counselling, it depends on the person. Some people prefer talking approaches, and some find hypnotherapy works well alongside them.
Often it becomes clearer after an initial conversation what might feel most helpful.
How can people get started?
The first step is a free 20-minute introductory conversation. That gives people space to talk through what they’re hoping for and ask any questions before deciding whether they’d like to continue.
Because this is a new service within Space Between Us, we’re offering a small number of introductory places for people who would like to try hypnotherapy over a short block of sessions and see whether it feels helpful for them.
Anyone who’s curious is very welcome to get in touch and find out more. Book your free consultation here.
